DAY OF SURGERY

3/16/2012

Surgery was tentatively scheduled for 10 today. Since this is something that wasn't planned they were just going to try to fit him in the surgery schedule. One of the anesthesiology came up and we had a chance to talk to him.

One of the Docs came in and said that the hearing test that they had talked about the day before had to happen before they operated. So at 10 when surgery was scheduled to start the EMT came up and put Arion on a gurney and took him by ambulance across the street to the ENT clinic to see Dr. Bien. Since I thought this was just a baseline test to see where his hearing was before the surgery so they could test it after to see any changes and it was only suppose to take a few minutes I stayed behind with Patience and waited for Meaghan to come up. While we were waiting the ENT clinic called and asked if I could come over so he could talk to us. Meaghan took us over to the clinic and we went back and laughed and joked with the EMT's while we waited for the Dr.

When the Dr. came in (he reminds me of me the way he puts the information and his bedside manner I know he knew the information he had just the way he passed it was more textbook direct and not really feelings considerate.) He said that Arion has Neurofibromitosis 2 and that he had Schwannomas. The Dr. said he is deaf in his right ear and the surgery would permanently render him deaf in that ear. The surgery would also paralyze the facial muscles on his right side and we can expect that the one on the left side will eventually grow to the point that it would happen on that side. What The Dr. didn't realize was that we hadn't even talked to
the neurosurgeon yet about what she thought was going on so all the information he passed was the first time we had heard any of it. After that they called the neurosurgeon and she came over and we all met in Dr. Biens' office and discussed what was going to take place the technological aspects of what was about to happen and

the plan of action. Both at that point decided that the surgery wouldnt take place that day that instead of rushing

him in to surgery that late in the day on such a hurried schedule they would wait till tuesday. Tuesday is the

Neurosurgeon's normal surgery day so she will have her whole team here and all of her instruments it will also

give them time to really think through their plan of attack. I know God is in charge of this and we can feel the

strength that prayers and positive thoughts give us. We are truly blessed with a wonderful support system. We

also had another MRI on his head and new scans on his spine because the NF2 can cause other tumors to grow

in those areas.
